In recent years, the Brewers have consistently traded away All-Star pitchers in their final season before free agency. Just a few weeks ago, they traded Freddy Peralta and Tobias Myers for top prospects, and last December, Devin Williams was sent to the Yankees. But the most notable trade occurred two years ago, when Milwaukee sent the 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner, Corbin Burnes, to the Baltimore Orioles.
This strategy, born out of necessity due to the team's financial limitations, has extended their window of contention. With a small payroll, the Brewers have mastered the art of 'surplus value,' maximizing the value of their roster by prioritizing players in the early stages of their MLB careers. These players, often at their physical peak, earn significantly less than free agents, creating a surplus in value for the team.
Take Caleb Durbin, for example. As a rookie, he was worth 2.8 bWAR but earned just under $760,000. On the free agent market, his value would have been roughly $28 million. This surplus value is the key to the Brewers' success, and it explains their focus on acquiring young talent.
While the return for Burnes may have been criticized, a deeper analysis reveals the value in the trade. Joey Ortiz, acquired in the deal, has provided $28.5 million in surplus value, despite an inconsistent start. DL Hall, despite injuries, has contributed $2.5 million. Together, the Brewers gained an $11 million advantage, and with four more seasons of control, the trade looks even better.
The draft pick received in the trade adds another layer to the story, and while it may seem like a small detail, it showcases the Brewers' long-term vision. Their strategy has led to seven postseason appearances in eight years and an impressive farm system. So, while it's tough to see stars traded, the Brewers' front office has a plan, and it's working.
