Harry Cobden is set to embark on a new chapter in his illustrious career, taking on the role of retained jockey for JP McManus, effective from the upcoming season. This move presents a significant opportunity for the former champion jockey, who is eager to showcase his skills and make a lasting impact.
The partnership will encompass a diverse range of McManus' horses, including the reigning Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup champion, Inothewayurthinkin, the Ryanair Chase winner, Fact To File, and the Unibet Champion Hurdle contender, The New Lion, in England. Additionally, Cobden will be riding Jonbon, a top two-mile chaser.
In an interview with Sky Sports Racing, Cobden expressed his enthusiasm, stating, 'It's a massive opportunity for next season, and I'm very much looking forward to it. It's a privilege to be asked, and McManus has a remarkable collection of horses. I'm excited to be a part of it.'
The decision to join McManus was influenced by the opportunity to ride his horses in Ireland, where the majority of McManus' green and gold horses are based. Cobden highlighted the quality of the horses, saying, 'That's where the real action is, and it's a great opportunity.'
However, before embarking on this new journey, Cobden is determined to conclude his tenure as stable jockey for Paul Nicholls on a high note. He acknowledges the immense support and opportunities provided by Nicholls and his team, stating, 'Without them, I wouldn't be in this position. They've been incredible, and I'm grateful for the ten fantastic years I've had with them.'
Cobden's dedication to Nicholls' stable is evident, as he aims to ride as many winners as possible for the team. He said, 'My primary focus is to make the most of this opportunity and continue to ride winners for Nicholls until the end of the season.'
The last retained rider for McManus was Barry Geraghty, who retired six years ago. Geraghty, now an ambassador for William Hill, believes Cobden is well-suited for the role. He said, 'It's an exceptional job in racing. McManus has a strong lineup of horses, including last season's Gold Cup and Ryanair winners, The New Lion, Jonbon, and several promising novices.'
Geraghty further emphasized the importance of riding in Ireland and Britain, stating, 'It's a significant opportunity for Harry, and I'm confident he'll excel. He's a skilled jockey and a good horseman, capable of adapting to the different environments.'
The comparison between Cobden and Mark Walsh, another accomplished jockey, is notable. Walsh, a brilliant rider, has achieved success for McManus, including riding the Gold Cup and Ryanair winner last season. Geraghty noted, 'Harry will look to follow in Walsh's footsteps, who is a brilliant rider and a good all-rounder.'
As Cobden takes on this new challenge, he acknowledges the internal pressure that comes with a significant role. However, he remains focused on his primary goal, which is to ride as many winners as possible for Nicholls and make the most of this exciting opportunity.
