Li Shuns de Groot's Dominance to Claim Her First Grand Slam Title
After a four-year reign of De Groot, who claimed four consecutive Australian Open titles from 2021-24, Li emerged victorious, showcasing her strategic prowess. The No.3 seed Li, who finished runner-up to Yui Kamiji at the US Open final last year, admitted she had no match for de Groot's prowess, but the Dutchwoman was no match for her today.
"Wow, first of all, a big congratulations to Li! You really destroyed me today, and I had no chance," de Groot said. "You played exceptionally well, and I'm sure you'll be in many more finals. I'll just have to step up my game next time."
Li's strategy played a pivotal role in her season-opening dominance, claiming the silverware on Saturday with a backhand winner. She attributed her success to maintaining a steady pace and applying pressure when opportunities arose.
"In general, our pace was quite similar," Li explained. "I focused on staying at the same pace and took advantage of any chances to exert pressure. This year, we've made significant strides in strategy, ensuring a clearer plan of action compared to the previous season."
Li's triumph marks a turning point in her career, as she now holds the prestigious Grand Slam title, while de Groot's streak has been halted, setting the stage for future competitions.
