Massive Winter Storm: US Braces for Snow, Ice, and Extreme Cold (2026)

A Massive Winter Storm Brings Chilling Temperatures and Snowfall to the US

A powerful Arctic blast is sweeping across the United States, bringing a chilling forecast to nearly 30 states and impacting over 160 million people. The cold front is expected to intensify on Thursday in the southwest, then move eastward over the weekend, affecting major cities and regions from Texas to the East Coast.

As the Polar Vortex settles over the country, temperatures could drop well below freezing in some areas. Meteorologists warn that this could lead to significant travel delays and disruptions, especially at major airports. The weather system is set to blanket cities like Memphis, Nashville, Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York with snow, while states across the interior plains may see temperatures plunge to -40F (-40C) or lower.

Rocky Mountain states can expect heavy snowfall by Friday. While exact snowfall totals in urban areas are still uncertain, some places may see over 12 inches (30cm) of snow. Further south, freezing rain could coat trees with ice, potentially causing power outages and hazardous travel conditions.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warns of extreme cold temperatures, with wind chills reaching well below average. This could lead to frostbite within minutes for exposed skin. The NWS advises to expect prolonged snow and ice impacts, including hazardous travel, power outages, tree damage, snow-covered roads, and reduced visibility.

Governors in states like Texas, North Carolina, and South Carolina have declared states of emergency, allowing emergency officials and National Guard troops to mobilize response efforts. The warnings come as a stark reminder of the 2021 Texas winter storm, which caused widespread power outages and energy grid failures.

Officials caution that cold temperatures could again cause pipes to freeze and burst, and roadways could be blocked for days, especially in southern states with limited de-icing equipment. The cold is expected to persist into next week, bringing a prolonged period of harsh winter weather.
