NASA & Axiom Space: Fifth Private Mission to the ISS Launching in 2027! 🚀 (2026)

NASA has officially partnered with Axiom Space for their fifth private crewed mission to the International Space Station (ISS), which is projected to launch no earlier than January 2027 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

This groundbreaking announcement underscores a significant shift in the realm of space exploration, as NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman stated, "The award of our fifth private astronaut mission shows that commercial space is not a distant promise, but a present reality." This initiative is crucial for enhancing access to low Earth orbit and fostering competition, ultimately laying the groundwork for NASA's future aspirations towards the Moon, Mars, and beyond. The agency is excited to expand on these capabilities through numerous private astronaut missions planned for the future.

Axiom Mission 5 is slated to operate aboard the ISS for up to 14 days, although the exact launch date will be influenced by the overall scheduling and traffic of spacecraft at the orbital research facility.

Dana Weigel, who manages the ISS Program at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, emphasized the importance of the ISS as a vital platform for commercial industry in low Earth orbit, stating, "Private astronaut missions allow the station to be used as a proving ground for new markets and technologies while enabling science, research, and outreach to contribute to a growing space economy."

As part of this mission, Axiom Space will propose four crew members to NASA and its international partners for review and approval. Once selected, these astronauts will undergo training alongside NASA personnel, international collaborators, and the launch provider to prepare for their upcoming mission.

"We are honored NASA awarded Axiom Space its fifth human spaceflight mission," remarked Jonathan Cirtain, president and CEO of Axiom Space. He noted that previous missions have played a pivotal role in expanding the global community of space explorers, enhancing scientific research in microgravity, and providing essential insights for developing the upcoming Axiom Station. This award highlights Axiom Space's dedication to transforming access to space and promoting international collaboration and research opportunities in low Earth orbit for everyone's benefit.

For this mission, Axiom Space will procure various services from NASA, such as crew consumables, cargo delivery, storage, and other essential resources for daily operations aboard the ISS. In return, NASA will obtain from Axiom the capability to safely transport scientific samples that require refrigeration during their return journey to Earth.

This selection was made based on proposals submitted in response to NASA's Research Announcement issued in March 2025. Additionally, NASA is currently finalizing details for the sixth private astronaut mission to the ISS and will provide more information as it becomes available.

Missions on board the International Space Station, including those involving private astronauts, are instrumental in advancing scientific understanding and testing new technologies that will facilitate future human and robotic exploration missions, aligning with NASA's broader objectives for lunar and Martian exploration, particularly under the Artemis campaign.
