Orioles' Minor League Recap: Injuries, Walk-Offs, and a Donnybrook
The Orioles' minor league system had a rollercoaster of a day, with injuries, walk-offs, and a high-scoring game in the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds.
Triple-A: Norfolk Tides
The Norfolk Tides secured a 4-2 win over the Nashville Brewers, thanks to a strong outing from Cade Povich, who gave up two solo home runs but kept the team in the game. The Tides' hitters came through in the seventh and ninth innings to secure the victory.
Enrique Bradfield, on the other hand, had a disappointing day, going 0-3 with a walk and an RBI groundout. His .660 OPS in Triple-A is a cause for concern, despite his speed.
Heston Kjerstad also struggled, going 0-4, as the Tides managed just four hits in total. However, the team's relief pitcher, Andrew Magno, continued his stellar season, pitching a scoreless eighth inning with just one hit allowed, lowering his ERA to 1.01 in 35.2 innings.
Double-A: Hartford (Rockies)
The Chesapeake Baysox suffered a 7-3 loss to the Hartford Rockies. Juaron Watts-Brown, an honorary hyphenated cousin, pitched five innings, allowing three hits and a walk with five strikeouts. The Baysox's struggles continued, giving up three runs in the seventh and ninth innings.
Aron Estrada, a player to watch, went 0-4 from the leadoff spot.
High-A: Greenville (Red Sox)
The Frederick Keys suffered a devastating 7-8 loss to the Greenville Red Sox, with Boston Bateman exiting the game after just 1.2 innings due to left triceps tightness. Bateman had been struggling even before the injury, allowing two runs on a hit and two walks with four strikeouts.
The Keys led going into the bottom of the ninth but collapsed, giving up two runs to suffer a walk-off loss.
Frederick had 12 hits, with five players recording multi-hit games, including Creed Willems, who had a standout performance with three RBIs in the first inning.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds
The Delmarva Shorebirds and the Salem Red Sox engaged in a wild 14-11 affair, with 25 combined runs, 22 hits, 13 walks, and seven errors. The Shorebirds emerged victorious, thanks to an eight-run fifth inning, which they never surrendered, despite giving up three runs in the seventh and ninth.
Jaiden Lo Re, a recent sensation, had a stellar game with two hits, three runs scored, and three RBIs, boosting his OPS to .954 since joining the Shorebirds. Jordan Sanchez also drove in three runs with two hits, including his sixth home run of the season. Stiven Martinez and DJ Layton showcased their speed, with Martinez stealing his eighth base and Layton stealing two bases, giving him 28 steals on the season.
