Reds Fans, Rejoice! The Cincinnati Reds have made a decision that's sure to bring a sigh of relief to many: star outfielder TJ Friedl is not on the trade block this offseason. For fans worried about losing a key player, this is excellent news.
There's been a lot of speculation this winter about potential trades, especially with the team looking for a power hitter. Many fans were concerned that Friedl, a valuable asset, might be moved. But according to reports from The Athletic, those fears were unfounded.
So, why is this such a big deal? Friedl is more than just a player; he's a spark plug. He led the team in on-base percentage with a solid .364 and consistently set the tone at the top of the batting order. In the 2025 season, he hit .261/.364/.378, with 14 home runs and a 109 wRC+. He also showed speed, ranking third on the team with 12 stolen bases. Moreover, Friedl demonstrated his grit by getting hit by pitches 16 times, ranking him sixth among all MLB players.
Remember the All-Star Buzz? Many fans may have forgotten that Friedl was playing at an All-Star level in the early part of the season. Through May, he was hitting .305/.388/.427, with four home runs and a 126 wRC+. Even in June, he continued to perform at a high level, hitting .283/.370/.415.
Even when his performance dipped in July, Friedl was still getting on base nearly 40% of the time. He ended the season with a late power surge, hitting .237/.355/.409 with a 113 wRC+.
What About New Additions? The Reds have added players like JJ Bleday and Dane Myers, and are still looking for more outfielders. But don't worry about these additions pushing Friedl out. However, a new centerfielder might shift Friedl to left field, where his arm strength could be better utilized.
Beyond the Stats: Friedl's impact goes beyond the numbers. He's a fan favorite because of his hustle, determination, and leadership in the clubhouse. He's the kind of player who will do whatever it takes to get on base.
But here's where it gets interesting... The Reds' decision to keep Friedl is great news, but it also raises questions. Will they continue to pursue other outfielders? And if so, how will they utilize the existing talent?
